Our History Together
Canberra Olympic Football Club has long valued its close relationship with the Hellenic Club of Canberra, which reflects their shared roots in Canberra’s Greek community. From the club’s perspective, the Hellenic Club has been far more than a sponsor—it has been a cultural partner that helps preserve and celebrate the heritage on which Canberra Olympic was founded in 1956. The club recognises that this connection keeps the traditions, identity, and spirit of the Greek-Australian community alive within local football.
Canberra Olympic is deeply grateful for the consistent support the Hellenic Club has provided over many years. Through sponsorship, hosting community events, and helping promote the club within the wider Canberra community, the Hellenic Club has played a meaningful role in strengthening the club’s ability to grow and compete. This support has helped Canberra Olympic invest in its players, develop its programs, and create opportunities for both men’s and women’s teams to succeed.
Just as importantly, the relationship represents a shared commitment to community. Canberra Olympic sees the Hellenic Club not only as a supporter but as a trusted partner that brings people together—supporters, families, and generations of Greek-Australians who take pride in the club’s achievements. The club remains sincerely thankful for the Hellenic Club’s ongoing encouragement and looks forward to continuing this valued partnership for many years to come.
About the Hellenic Club
During the late 1960’s and early 1970’s there was an overwhelming social need for Canberra’s Greek Community to have a meeting place and social venue. They needed a place to bring their families alongside their Greek and Australian friends. In particular, a place to gather for dances, weddings, children’s groups and a meeting place for the elderly to socialise.
Finally, in 1976, excavations began on the Phillip site. On 9 May 1976, the land was blessed by the Greek Orthodox Archbishop Ezekiel and the Greek Ambassador laid a brick in the footings. Construction was at last underway on the site to house Canberra’s Hellenic Club.
