Olympic was founded in the early 1950s by the local Greek community of Canberra. Formally the name Olympic was decided in a General Meeting of players and committee members in 1956 with the alternative name AEK losing out in the vote.
Olympic have won the ACT top division league (premiership) on multiple occasions under the names Canberra Olympic, Olympic and Downer Olympic. The most recent title was the NPLW Capital Football premiership in 2023 when they claimed Grand Final glory to go alongside their League Championship trophy in a seven goal thriller at Deakin Stadium as they defeated Belconnen United 4-3 in a superb Women’s Grand Final to lift their fourth trophy in the past two seasons.
In 2024 the NPL Women’s First Grade and NPL Boys Under 15 teams were well placed heading into the final series as League Champions. The NPL Under 18 Boys team was victorious in their Grand Final, as were the NPLW First Grade team, winning their third successive title.
In 2025, Canberra Olympic’s senior men had a real “reset and respond” kind of year. After dropping out of the top-tier National Premier Leagues Capital Football the season prior, Olympic attacked the year in the Capital Premier League with purpose—and finished it the best way possible: by winning the grand final 3–1 over ANU FC on 21 September 2025. It was the sort of campaign that signalled momentum returning to the club: consistent performance, a big-game edge when it mattered, and silverware to cap it off.
On the women’s side, Olympic also made a deep run in the National Premier Leagues Women’s Capital Football finals — earning a grand final berth after an extra-time 3–2 win over Canberra Croatia FC in the preliminary final (15 September 2025). In the decider, though, Belconnen United FC proved too strong, winning 4–0 as part of an undefeated, trophy-heavy season. And it wasn’t just the seniors making noise: Olympic’s pathway kept producing too, highlighted by the club’s NPL Boys U16 side winning their grand final 1–0.
2026 promises to be a big year with additional players joining from areas such as Gungahlin to take part in the local Community League. Bring the season on!
